Stage Dakar - Dakar

Today a late Start at 7h45 to go to the beach. Then a french breakfast on the beach and photo session.

Afterwards we started in waves of 20 riders for a special of 15km. Then one by one on the podium for photos and finisher medals.

It was nice to finish the Dakar with a short easy stage. We did a bit of riding and a lot of talking with all the riders with whom we were racing over the last 2 weeks.

I now found a plane ticket back for tomorrow evening. Tomorrow morning we will drive the bikes to the harbour and get them ready for shipping.

Greetings to all,

Ragi

Next challenge: Get the kids to school and crêche in time....:-)

Stage Tambacounda - Dakar

Today we arrived in Dakar. The Stage was a very long Enduro Test on hard ground with dust and sand on it which made it slippery. It was fun, I liked it. In slippery conditions I was happy to ride the light 660 with little power...:-)

I passed 3-4 bikes in the first 20minutes and then I was riding practically alone without any dust for the rest of the day. I had some trouble overtaking a Quad because it was going rather fast and making a lot of dust. Then it made a navigation mistake and I could see my track well again.

In the 225km of test I suddenly saw a tree coming at me. I did some more or less controlled braking with sliding of both wheels to go around the tree. I hit the tree sideways with the skidplate and the rear suspension and the bike went around the tree and I didn't fall. A shame that wasn't filmed. The skidplate came out of its rear attachments and I rode the last 80km with the skidplate just attached with the front bolts and dangling down. I have tested that before in Tunesia, it holds up pretty well. After the special I put the skid plate back in its rear holder. That takes about 10 minutes when you are alone as the sidestand is always in the way when you try to bolt the thing on.

Otherwise the liaison through Dakar to the Finish in Le Meridien is quite a driving experience. Luckily I have experienced Kuala Lumpur traffic on a Bike and in a car several times so that Dakar traffic was not too shocking.

I have the shits a little bit and Immodium is my best friend right now. After tomorrow I have my dosis of sport and motorbiking for a while and I need to digest all the information thrown at me for the last 2 weeks.

Stage Kayes - Tambacounda

We got up very early 4h30 to do the liaison at night and crossing the border to Senegal.

Can't remember much of the stage apart that it was tiring!

We arrived early though in the bivouac and there was great food and chairs and tables to eat at. Otherwise we always ate on the floor on carpets.

Stage Ayoun-Kayes

A technical stage with lots of dust. At the end of the stage I saw my friend and team mate Bob riding very slowly. Bram van Dorp was with him and told me that Bob fell hard and hurt his Right shoulder. I told them that there was only 3km to go to the special finish and I would see them there. It was too dangerous to ride slowly in a pack of 3 because some cars where overtaking.

At the finish I was translating to the doctor for Bob and monitoring his health status. The doctor was a friend of mine with whom I rode the Trefle Lozerien back in 2001. Bob was not well at all and we gave him the time necessary to take the decision himself to end his Dakar.

Stage Nema - Ayoun el Atrous

The 280 km of road liaison went without problems. One had to be careful of donkeys, goat and dromedaries. The donkeys stay still in the middle of the road but the goat and dromedaries are unpredictable.

My Bike had an oil change and new tires and a complete check up, everything fine. My french friends on the Rally here say I will enjoy tomorrow, a bit of technical riding. I am
staying calm though, Dakar is only 3 days away.

The Yamaha 450 of my team mate Richard was repaired and fitted with a new engine. It is running fine and Richard is still in the race.

Today nobody of the team encountered problems, apart that Rob's 525 is still not 100 percent and giving petrol pump problems. Not that important, because he is following the assistance route to Dakar with our Jeep and Truck.

I had a little stomach alert, so I took some Ercefleuril and some Immodium rapidly. A bit of prevention and a special thought for Jean Luc.

Otherwise also a thought for my colleague Madou, because we are entering his birth country Mali tomorrow. I guess the scenery is different to what he is seeing out of his 24th floor window...

Thanks to dakarleeuw.nl again for their mechanics support and sattelite internet, which works amazingly!!!!!

Love to the family and good night Toby and Hugo, a couple of days now and I can tuck you in again.

Salut Ragnar,

Stage Nema - Nema

Today we were riding along sand paths in the Mauretanian Savanna for nearly 400km. The stage was short, fast and quite physical, deep sand. The first 180 km to CP 1 were quite dangerous because there was a lot of dust and sometimes quite slippery on hard ground with sand and dust on top. Visibility was precarious but one had to ride at a good rythm so that the 1st Cars come by as late as possible.

At CP1 the refueling was a bit of a problem because everybody was hectical and the control post people lost track a bit who came first and when the 15 min where over for each rider. My GPS lost connection for a few minutes because it was ratteling heavyly on its support on the handlebar. The rubber absorption blocks newly fitted yesterday where too soft and made it only about 200km. This afternoon that problem was fixed again.

After CP1 I could feel that Riders slowed down their speed a little bit. I continued with a steady rythm and made it to the finish safely.

A solid day of Sport after all with 4h riding at a fast pace.

My Fitness is good and my KTM660 is still running smoothly.

Tomorrow just a short route towards Mali and then the very hard, slippery and dusty tracks of Mali. I will also take my Malaria pills as from tonight.

I heard that my german compatriote Werner Pfeuffer didn't start today because of severe shoulder pain. I'm sorry for him because he rode quite well up to now and limited his problems.

My team mate Rob has arrived in the afternoon. The petrol pump on his KTM525 seems to have been the problem. The Bike will be fixed and Rob will ride to Dakar with the Assistance Jeep and Truck.

Love to the family and good night Toby and Hugo

Bob, Team mate of Ragi in Nema:

Weltrusten

93) Team news Ragi
Team news:

Pascal had to abandon this morning because his little Honda 250 4 stroke had engine problems. He finished the stage to Tichit but knew he couldn't plow through the deep le Touquet sand for 250km today. so he called the Mechanics and there where on the way to Tichit from Nema with a Taxi and a new engine. The Taxi broke down and when they arrived Pascal had been taken out of the Race by the organisation. Pascal never gives up...They took the last organisation plane to Nema and are all here now.

Rob had fuel problems on his bike today and couldn't fix it.

Marcel is still going like a rocket, but he fell today without consequence. His luck is up for a few days.

Johan is also going strong and had no problems and is still fit.

Richard is suffering a bit from his hands and he is really scared of the night driving, That is no problem really because the GPS arrow is on at the end of the stage and the organisation is absolutely great, so really no worries.

We have two extra Mechanics from www.dakarleeuw.nl who have all their riders out of the Race. One of the guys has a PC with Sat internet, so I can write all this!!

O.k., I'm going to bed with a muscle relaxant.

Ragi in Nema:

I arrived safely in Nema. Yesterdays stage to Tichit was long and phisically using, so I took it in good rythm without taking risks. The risk is that there are stones under the sand and sometimes the bike can jump unexpectedly. Then I phoned Paris on the Irritrack because nr 65 Buke burnt down. I arrrived in Tichit at night with about 13h spent on the Bike. I liked riding at night, no problem with good Xenon light.

Todays stage to Nema was more technical through sand dunes like Le Touquet Race and some hard paths at the end. I could drive quite fast safely and arrived in the bivouac early before nightfall. Also there was 100km less then yesterday, so one can manage the lengh easier. My shoulder feels strong again after the fall before the rest day, so confidence is up again.

Tomorrow quite a short stage, but I will remain carefull, a fall on hard ground can destroy the bike easily.

Love to The family, good night Toby and Hugo!!!!

Another thing from ATAR:

All my team mates are also still in the Race. That is a performance in itself becauce already 35 percent of the bikes are out. A little thing can put you out of the Race very quickly.

Marcel Pronk: No problem what so ever, going well.
Johan van der Laan: No problem what so ever, Feeling well.
Pascal de Baar: No problem, just a light infection on his hand because of a prick from a bush.
Richard: No problem, his hands feel a bit used from the 4000km.
Bob: He is feeling his left shoulder a bit.
Rob: Feeling well, but he was diagnosed with a torn cross ligament: He feels really well though and doesn't feel any pain. He continues.

Ragi in ATAR:

Hello, I am safely arrived in Atar and having a great days rest in the sun.

Yesterday I fell on a large piste and hurt my left shoulder a bit. Today a bit of physio and I just had a massage so it should be allright tomorrow. I was very unlucky to fall because as always I ride with a good margin.

Otherwise I helped 2 motorbikes with technical problems yesterday and gave a Quad some petrol.

I also lost a bit of time because I navigated the wrong way. I stopped at some locals and asked them the general direction towards Atar. What an adventure. Then I saw the dust of Robby Gordons Hummer in the distance and then I could relock on the roadbook and follow the right Cap again.

The space there is here is amazing.

One of our mechanics was repatriated home with a kidney infection. I heard he is well though.

Our assistance Jeep lost a wheel on the way to Atar. They managed to weld provisionally and today they will get parts flown in by DHL.

The mechanics are working hard on the motorbikes to get them fit for the next days. They will be technical and quite hard.

Thanks for all your support messages.

I'm on the PC of my friend Jean Luc Maindron, the President of the Jury and the President of my french Enduro CLUB, Moto Club Verrieres in Paris.

Hi,

I arrived in Zouerat without much problems. This morning was hard on the road with sand storm. Then it began to rain. That was great because the sand was not flying anymore. But we got very wet . The riding in the mud was great fun though. I had to stop in the liaison, to attach my roadbook holder. 4000km of rattling got the screws loose.

Then the special was amazing. 140km/h on the sand flats of Mauretania and then a bit of navigation through the dunes.

Then 100km of camel grass, and then 100km of deep sand piste. The KTM 660 is great. I have to revise my fork tonight and I will ask Ktm for a factory rear absorber. My standard piece doesn't follow the speed here. I need high speed compression.

My assistance has not arrived.

Bye, I'm great, not fallen once yet, I take it esay

Hi everybody,

here is Björn again, Ragnar's brother.

I just had him on the phone again.

He arrived in Tan Tan without any problem. It was a "short" day for him .... amusing isn't it.

He started to get his road book much better under control and was therefore able to increase his speed. The first day's he was apparently driving only up to 50% of his capacities. In other words, he is feeling much more confident.

So, he is feeling well, motorbike is also running fine ..... no worries.

Hi Ragi
Well done, it is not so far to go now, one day at a time.

I´m suprised though that you have problems with the navigation since you always claims that you "connait le coin".

Good Luck and take care.

Hello everybody,

I am the brother of Ragnar. I just had him on the phone this evening (after day 3).

I also noticed that his tracking system somehow did not work. I told him that.

Until now his race is going absolutely fine. Motorbike is running well, without any problems.

Day 3 was apparently very dangerous and this is why he took it easily. He had the chance to follow a rider who already participated 3 times on Dakar. He apparently helped him to find its way through this difficult day.

He also told me that so far riding is not the problem. Navigation seems to be a much more difficult task.

He sounds absolutely fine and motivated.

He sends his regards to all of you.

Cheers

Some fresh news from Ragi on the boat to Africa:

extremely treacherous 2nd stage but no fall at all. The KTM got what it deserved; fresh oil and a clean air filter. Dust should not bother the duo too much for the first stage in Africa, as 3/4 of the motorbikes are behind him and with some good time cushion with the cars starting after. Plan A is still on.
"So far so good" says the chicken entering the oven ...

Go Ragi, Go Ragi, ahan, ahan...

Hi Ragi,
It seems to have started very well for you and your team. We are behind you. As everyone says it starts only in Africa.
The first stage was quite tough but it seems you've mastered it ;-) Well done. Good luck.

Big Frank

Vandaag veel mist op de verbinding.~
Dus brrrr koud soms.~
Rob.

Day 1:

A physical stage today. First 120km on the road, quite cold!. Then a deep sand stage of 120km where a lot of bikes had problems. I must have overtaken about 100 bikes in the stage. A lot of break downs already. Then after the stage I helped my team mate Bob to tow him to the nearest petrol station. The 660 consumed about 12l of petrol in the sandy test. On the highway only 5 Litres. We didn't want to fill the bike to the rim for the deep sand stage.

Everything is fine, ready for tomorrow. All team mates are also very well and ready for tomorrow.

Greetings,

Ragi

Day -2:

The KTM 660 is now ready in Parc Ferme for the start. Administrative controls took from 10h30 to about 12h30 and was quite good fun with not much stress, well organized. The technical control was very long however, because everyone was waiting for their jackets to be fitted with punch buttons.
It took quite a while to do some rewiring of the Irritrack power cables, because this year it needs 12V permanently, even if the main contact switch is off.
One unfortunate mishap this afternoon: While waiting in line for my race number to be stuck on the Bike, the bike standing next to me fell of its sidestand against my leg and scraped my skin around the knee. That didn't feel good at all, but nothing serious.
Tomorrow a rest day with some organizing of my race gear and trunks.

Geetings,
Ragi

Just got the good news in the letter box: My entry request was accepted, I am one of the 240 Riders in the Motorbike/Quad category who will start for the 2007 Euromilhoes Dakar.
(Amazing: 330 Riders sent their application documents in the first week, so 90 entry's had to be refused by the organisation)

Yes, first Dakar participation.

..et oui Rémi, voir 2 bières a Dakar...
